Turning Point named 2007 Champion in Action in Michigan

Charter One Bank and WXYZ-TV 7 provide $25,000 grant, volunteer and promotional support in recognition of excellence in violence prevention

DETROIT     (October 10, 2007) - Charter One and WXYZ-TV 7 have named Turning Point, Inc. as the 2007 Champions in Action® winner in Michigan in the area of violence prevention. As part of this award, Turning Point will receive a $25,000 grant, public relations and volunteer support in recognition of its outstanding commitment to preventing domestic violence in metropolitan Detroit.

The Champions in Action program was launched in November 2005 by Charter One and WXYZ-TV 7 to recognize and support non-profit organizations that champion change in our communities and work to address the needs of southeast Michigan.

Since opening in 1980 Turning Point has provided emergency shelter to more than 22,000 women and children, growing from a 24-hour crisis line and 14-bed shelter to providing comprehensive advocacy and counseling services. Its Rape Awareness and Dating Violence Education Program began in 1996, educating more than 40,000 students in 60 percent of the school districts in Macomb County. In 1999, Turning Point started the first Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner’s Program in southeast Michigan, providing expert care and treatment to sexual assault victims and their families.

Turning Point provides direct services to survivors of domestic and sexual violence, including a 24-hour crisis line, emergency shelter and support services. Prevention Education staff work with area schools to educate youth on domestic and sexual violence, including myths and facts of dating violence, consent and coercion and sexual harassment. Other programs and services include a resale shop, Forensic Nurse Examiner Program, Hospital and Court Advocacy and Personal Protection Order Assistance.

 “Turning Point enables survivors of domestic and sexual violence to regain control of their lives by eliminating barriers to justice and safety,” said Sandra Pierce, President, Charter One, Michigan. "We are pleased to partner with WXYZ-TV 7 to recognize the important work of Turning Point and to help provide the agency with the resources to advance its mission and reach.”

"WXYZ-TV 7 is proud to partner with Charter One to recognize the extraordinary commitment of Turning Point," said Grace Gilchrist, Vice President and General Manager, WXYZ-TV 7. "We applaud its work and look forward to doing our part to help raise awareness of its important programs."

As the 2007 fourth quarter Champion in Action, Turning Point will receive:
• A $25,000 grant in unrestricted funds from the Charter One Foundation;
• Media coverage from WXYZ-TV 7, including public service announcements;
• Volunteer support from Charter One and WXYZ-TV 7 employees;
• Promotional support in all Charter One branches and on its ATMs throughout Michigan; and
• Exposure on both Charter One’s and WXYZ-TV 7’s Web sites.

“We are thrilled to be chosen as a Champion in Action. It is an honor to have our work to prevent domestic and sexual violence recognized, and to be the beneficiary of not only financial support, but also volunteer support and increased public awareness,” said Suzanne Coats, CEO of Turning Point.

A group of community leaders and representatives of WXYZ-TV 7 and Charter One comprise a committee which selects a Champion in Action each quarter for its work on a particular social issue. 2007 categories included: Elder Support; Youth Programming; Job Training & Placement; and Violence Prevention.
