Operation ABLE of Michigan named 2007 Champion in Action
Charter One Bank and WXYZ-TV 7 provide $25,000 grant, volunteer and promotional support in recognition of excellence in job training and placementDETROIT (June 18, 2007) Charter One Bank and WXYZ-TV 7 have named Operation ABLE of Michigan as the 2007 Champion in Action winner in Michigan in the area of job training and placement. As part of this award, Operation ABLE will receive a $25,000 grant, public relations and volunteer support in recognition of its outstanding commitment to mid-career workers.
The Champions in Action program was launched in November 2005 by Charter One and WXYZ-TV 7 to recognize and support non-profit organizations that champion change in our communities and work to address the needs of southeast Michigan.
Since 1986 Operation ABLE of Michigan is the exclusive organization that helps people age 40 and older to obtain work and remain employable throughout their lifetimes. Due to a number of circumstances, mid-career workers become displaced or older individuals find themselves having to enter the workforce for the first time. Operation ABLE’s goal is to empower adults to manage their own job placement process and become career resilient and economically independent.
In the Operation ABLE Career Resilience Center, mid-career job seekers become proficient in Microsoft Office applications which improve reading, writing, communications and typing skills. Operation ABLE also offers career counseling, job search workshops, and resume and interview preparation. Each year Operation ABLE conducts a job fair that serves thousands of mature job seekers, not just its clients.
“Operation ABLE helps mid-career adults expand their job skill sets but just as importantly, it helps them regain confidence and take control of their careers,” said Sandra Pierce, President and CEO of Charter One Bank, Michigan. "We are pleased to partner with WXYZ-TV/ 7 to recognize the important work of Operation ABLE of Michigan and to help provide the resources to advance its mission and reach.”
"WXYZ-TV 7 is proud to partner with Charter One Bank to recognize the extraordinary commitment of Operation ABLE," said Grace Gilchrist, Vice President and General Manager, WXYZ-TV 7. "We applaud its work and look forward to doing our part to help raise awareness of its important programs."
As the 2007 second-quarter Champion in Action, Operation ABLE of Michigan will receive:
• A $25,000 grant in unrestricted funds from the Charter One Foundation;
• Media coverage from WXYZ-TV 7, including public service announcements;
• Volunteer support from Charter One and WXYZ-TV 7 employees;
• Promotional support in all Charter One branches and on its ATMs throughout Michigan; and
• Exposure on both Charter One’s and WXYZ-TV 7’s Web sites.
“We are grateful to Charter One and WXYZ-TV 7 for the recognition and opportunity to help raise awareness about our training and placement programs,” said Mary McDougall, President and CEO of Operation ABLE of Michigan. “As an organization dedicated to assisting mid-career workers, sharing information with the public and employers is critical to our mission.”
A group of community leaders and representatives of WXYZ-TV/7 and Charter One comprise a committee which selects a Champion in Action each quarter for its work on a particular social issue. 2007 categories include: Elder Support; Youth Programming; Job Training & Placement; and Violence Prevention.
