Charter One Bank donates 5,000 turkeys to Carve Out Hunger in Chicago

Bank Partners with Chicago Food Depository to provide a turkey dinner for up to 50,000 needy Chicago residents

CHICAGO (December 19, 2005) - Low-income Chicago families that rely on donated food will be able to enjoy a holiday meal this year as a result of Charter One Bank's Carving Out Hunger Initiative. Charter One's donation of $50,000 to the Greater Chicago Food Depository will enable the distribution of approximately 5,000 frozen turkeys to men, women and children throughout the Chicago area this holiday season.

At 10:30 a.m., on Monday, December 19, Charter One Illinois President and CEO, Paul Greig, Greater Chicago Food Depository Executive Director, Mike Mulqueen and dozens of Charter One volunteers will surprise the Humboldt Park community by giving away a turkey to approximately 300 people who regularly benefit from the Chicago Food Depository's monthly food distribution. The distribution will take place at the Humboldt Park Field House - 1400 N. Sacramento Avenue.

"While the problem of hunger persists in our communities, in Chicago we are fortunate to have a safety net with the help of generous corporate citizens like Charter One," said Food Depository Executive Director Mike Mulqueen. "This holiday season, with Charter One's help, about 5,000 families will be able to enjoy a hearty, healthy meal. For our communities to combat hunger, it's so important that we all work together in ways just like this, with non-profit organizations, individuals and corporations all pitching in to make a difference in people's lives."

Charter One's Carving Out Hunger Initiative will cover the cost of approximately 5,000, 13-lb turkeys and will feed up to 50,000 people in the Chicago area.

"The work of the Greater Chicago Food Depository is incredibly important, and Charter One is proud to be a partner during this holiday season," said Paul Greig, President and CEO of Charter One Bank, Illinois. "Charter One recognizes the increased demand on Chicagoland's food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters-- and understands the need for corporations to be active in addressing this need."
