The Greening of Detroit named a Champion in Action®

Charter One Bank and WXYZ-TV 7 provide $25,000 grant, volunteer and promotional support in recognition of environmental impact

DETRIOT     (July 08, 2010) - Charter One and WXYZ-TV 7 announce The Greening of Detroit as the 2010 Champion in Action® winner in Michigan, in the area of environmental impact. As the beneficiary of this award, The Greening of Detroit will receive a $25,000 grant, and extensive public relations and volunteer support.

The Greening of Detroit works to grow a “greener” Detroit through planting and educational programs, environmental leadership, advocacy, and by building community capacity. The organization has been improving Detroit’s environment for 20 years. Since 2006, its programs have tripled; they are reforesting neighborhoods, growing food for others, teaching children and serving as a portal into the green jobs market.

Through partnerships with community associations, schools and businesses The Greening helps to reforest public areas — creating a balanced and healthy tree canopy, beautifying neighborhoods and restoring balance to local ecosystems. The Greening’s community garden program is helping transform vacant lots into valuable resources that provide nutritious food and help combat hunger. The Environmental Education programs help children develop a love of science and become stewards of their environment while learning about plants and animals through observation, planting trees and gardens, and constructing habitats for birds and butterflies.

“The Greening of Detroit is not only improving our environment, but it is also providing meaningful programs that benefit our citizens,” said Sandra Pierce, President, Charter One, Michigan. “It is growing future environmental leaders through school programs and helping citizens in the fight against hunger through the creation of community gardens.”

"WXYZ-TV 7 is proud to partner with Charter One to recognize the meaningful work of The Greening of Detroit,” said Eduardo Fernandez, Vice President and General Manager, WXYZ-TV 7. "We congratulate the organization and look forward to working with The Greening of Detroit to help raise awareness and advance its mission.”

The Champions in Action program was launched in November 2005 by Charter One and WXYZ-TV 7 to recognize and support nonprofit organizations that champion change in our communities and work to address the needs of southeast Michigan. The Greening of Detroit is the 18th organization to be recognized since the program’s inception.

  • A $25,000 grant in unrestricted funds from the Charter One Foundation
  • Media coverage from WXYZ-TV 7, including public service announcements
  • Volunteer support from Charter One colleagues
