WARM Training Center named a Champion in Action in Michigan
Charter One Bank and WXYZ-TV 7 provide $25,000 grant, volunteer and promotional support in recognition of environmental leadershipDETROIT (October 14, 2009) - Charter One and WXYZ-TV 7 have announced WARM Training Center as the 2009 Champions in Action® winner in Michigan in the area of environmental impact. As the beneficiary of this award, WARM Training Center will receive a $25,000 grant, public relations and volunteer support.
The Champions in Action program was launched in November 2005 by Charter One and WXYZ-TV 7 to recognize and support nonprofit organizations that champion change in our communities and work to address the needs of southeast Michigan.
WARM Training Center has been at the forefront of consumer education in energy consumption and renewable energy sources for nearly three decades, reaching more than 5,000 individuals and organizations each year through a variety of programs. WARM Training Center partners with the Michigan Public Service Commission, Salvation Army and THAW to educate people on small but practical steps they can take to use energy more efficiently in their homes. These changes can lead to a reduction in carbon emissions, a known cause of pollution and climate change. Through the annual distribution of more than $100,000 worth of energy-saving supplies like reusable storm window kits, low-flow showerheads and weather stripping, WARM helps residents – especially in low-income areas – reduce their energy consumption and save money on their utility bills.
WARM’s workshops and home visits teach individuals and organizations how to improve their indoor air quality by reducing toxins and how to take an active role in modifying behaviors that decrease energy consumption and its impact on the environment. WARM is leading the green jobs movement in Detroit with two unique programs that are setting the standard in their fields. In partnership with Voices for Earth Justice, WARM engages young people through its Youth Energy Squad (D-YES) by installing energy-saving kits that help low-income households conserve energy.
In partnership with Henry Ford Community College, Focus: Hope and SER Metro, WARM created a hands-on 10-week program to train and certify weatherization specialists. Participants who complete the extensive training also develop solid building blocks for pathways into other energy-related fields such as solar, HVAC, and energy audits.
“WARM Training Center teaches people how to lessen their impact on the environment and save money on their utility bills – a powerful combination that benefits both the individual and our communities,” said Sandra Pierce, President, Charter One, Michigan.
"WXYZ-TV 7 is proud to partner with Charter One to recognize the important contributions of WARM Training Center,” said Bob Sliva, Vice President and General Manager, WXYZ-TV 7. "We congratulate the organization and look forward to working with WARM to help raise awareness and advance its mission.”
As the 2009 fourth quarter Champion in Action, WARM Training Center will receive:
• A $25,000 grant in unrestricted funds from the Charter One Foundation.
• Media coverage from WXYZ-TV 7, including public service announcements.
• Volunteer support from Charter One colleagues.
• Promotional support in all Charter One branches and ATMs throughout Michigan.
• Exposure on both Charter One’s and WXYZ-TV 7’s Web sites.
“We are proud to be chosen as a Champion in Action. It is a privilege to have our programs recognized for the resulting positive impact on the environment,” said Robert Chapman, Executive Director of WARM Training Center. “Teaching individuals, organizations and builders about energy efficiency and sustainable building will have a lasting impact on our environment.”
Community leaders and representatives of WXYZ-TV 7 and Charter One comprise a committee which selects a Champion in Action each quarter for its work on a particular social concern. 2009 categories were: Youth Programming, Housing, Financial Literacy and Environmental Impact.
