Egidija Stankunaite of Charter One on loan to People’s Resource Center

Community Service Sabbatical program reaches a milestone with 100 community service colleague sabbaticals since 1994

CHICAGO (March 28, 2012) – Egidija Stankunaite, a teller at Charter One’s Lisle, Ill., branch, has been awarded a Community Service Sabbatical. She is on loan for three months to People’s Resource Center, a Wheaton, Ill.-based nonprofit organization that works to respond to basic human needs, promote dignity and justice, and create a future of hope and opportunity for the residents of Illinois’ DuPage County.

Egidija Stankunaite, who has been with the bank since 2010, is working with People’s Resource Center as a full-time volunteer for three months during a paid leave of absence from the bank.

The Community Service Sabbatical reaches a milestone this year with the placement of the 100th sabbatical recipient. Started in 1994, recipients have donated 48,000 volunteer hours of community service, saving nonprofits more than $1 million based on the hourly wage for volunteers as determined by Independent Sector.

"Community service is one of our core values at Charter One, and we are very proud of the commitment shown by Egidija and our other Community Service Sabbatical volunteers, who voluntarily suspend their ‘day jobs’ to donate their skills and their energy to organizations like People’s Resource Center, which are so important to the health of local communities," said Scott C. Swanson, President, Charter One and RBS Citizens, Illinois. "We know from the organizations for which our colleagues have volunteered in the past that our colleagues make a real difference in their sabbaticals. It is also a rewarding experience for our sabbatical recipients who come back to work with a different perspective on life and a better understanding of the needs in our community. We congratulate Egidija on this opportunity and look forward to learning from her experiences ourselves."

Since 1975, People’s Resource Center has been bringing neighbors together to respond to hunger and poverty in DuPage County. With a team of more than 1,000 volunteers, PRC offers nutritious food and other basic necessities like clothes and rent assistance for people facing tough times. In addition, PRC connects people with resources—education and tutoring, jobs, technology, art, a caring community—to create a future of hope and opportunity for all.

As a full-time volunteer, Egidija’s time is focused on food pantry services, empowerment and career development programs, literacy programs, and community outreach efforts. She has also been instrumental in helping facilitate the LEAP program—a work readiness course for PRC’s clients who are between the ages of 17 and 21 and face obstacles securing employment.

"We are honored that Egidija has chosen to volunteer with People’s Resource Center and thankful to Charter One for supporting her efforts," said Kim Perez, Executive Director of People’s Resource Center. "We have already seen what a tremendous asset she is to our organization and we look forward to continue working with and learning from her."
